I love a new school year. When August 1st comes around, the emails start coming and the cell phone is ringing. Ideas and opportunities from STC business partners committed to making the new school year unforgettable start coming to fruition.
This summer, on the day of the eclipse, I was at Instron (if you were wondering, Instron with over 2,200 employees manufactures tensile, compression, fatigue, impact, rheology, and structural testing machines, testing a variety of materials and range of applications. Yep, STEM in action!) There were five of us at a conference room table brainstorming on how to inspire, inform and connect students to Instron to change their lives! Suddenly, it was 2:40 PM and the group dashed out to door to view the eclipse through fancy glasses, Corn Flakes boxes and other made up bits. Like kids at recess!
Another day in August was spent at Siemens Healthineers creating a brand new program for students. The Siemens group had spent hours thinking about relevancy and connection to bridge gaps between classroom instruction and real life practical opportunities. How about that?
And the first week of September brings the opening meeting of the NVCC EBC, a group of passionate, creative local business leaders coming together to plan another school year of business and industry site based connections for our schools: Go to School Day, the NVLI (Neponset Valley Leadership Institute) Leadership Seminar and loads of internships and shadow events. Wow!
What is amazing is the continued response from our business partners who believe in the STC mission; the eagerness of our school partners to maximize every opportunity for every student and the magic that happens every school year through STC. It’s not really magic but determination and unflagging commitment to excellence.
My belief: You were born with the ability to change someone’s life. Don’t ever waste it.
